Drug trafficking and drug offenses: Criminal defence lawyers

Drug trafficking charges may include conspiracy to import or supply drugs, as well as the act of importing them yourself. In either case, these are some of the most serious charges when it comes to illegal substances.

In most situations, drug trafficking is a complex crime that is carefully planned and it may have far-reaching implications, across many people and countries. Often, the investigations could also be international projects that may have been going on for months or even years.

Of course, trafficking isn't the only charge that you may be facing. Drug offences could also include allegations of cultivating cannabis, manufacturing illicit substances, possession, supplying, intent to supply or offering to supply. In addition, it's common for drugs offences to be connected to money laundering.

If you are being investigated for, or have been accused of, drug trafficking or other drug offences Christian Khan Solicitors may be able to help you.

The Misuse of Drugs Act 1971

When it comes to any illegal substances, the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 is the most relevant piece of legislation on the books.

It was designed to put a stop to the use of drugs for non-medicinal purposes, and explains what activities are illegal in regards to any controlled substance. It also provides law enforcement officers the powers to stop, search and detain individuals if there is reasonable suspicion that they are in possession of drugs.

The act defines what is meant by the term controlled substance and it categorises the drugs into three types: Class A, B and C. Substances labelled A are treated as the most dangerous and drug offences surrounding them will carry the largest penalties.

In 2005, various amendments and adjustments were made to the original legislation with the Drugs Act 2005.

Other statutes that further outline various drug offences include the Medicines Act 1968, the Drug Trafficking Act 1994 and the Crime and Disorder Act 1998.
