Violent crime: Murder, Manslaughter, GBH

If you are being investigated or have been charged with a violent crime like murder, manslaughter or GBH, then it's important that you get legal advice as soon as possible.

Here at Christian Khan, our solicitors are highly experienced in all aspects of homicide and assault law and we can provide the criminal law help that you need to defend yourself and ensure that you are treated fairly throughout the ordeal.

What is violent crime?

There are many different types of violent crime, but they can all be described as activities where a person is treated with physical force or violence against their will.

Some of the various types of violent crime include assault and GBH (which stands for grievous bodily harm). In the UK, sexual offences like sexual abuse and rape are also classified as violent crime.

If a death occurs due to a violent crime, this is called homicide and the Homicide Act 1957 defined the different kinds of killings. These include:
  • Murder - This is when a person has been killed with malicious intent.
  • Involuntary manslaughter - Deaths caused by involuntary manslaughter could include those involving negligence on behalf of the person accused of the crime, or the undertaking of dangerous activities that led to the death.
  • Voluntary manslaughter - In these cases, there may have been intent to murder, but other circumstances could provide a partial defence. Examples include diminished responsibility (such as mental illness), loss of control or suicide pact.
